Change is in the air, & at Planet Oasis, we’re all about turning that change into a chance to thrive! If you’ve been scrolling through NDIS updates & feeling a bit like you’re trying to read a map in a mirror, you aren’t alone. The NDIS is going through its biggest "vibe shift" yet with the rollout of New Framework Planning on July 1, 2026.
You asked & we listened! You wanted a clear, witty, & actually helpful guide to navigating these new waters without the corporate headache. Whether you’re a long-term participant or just starting to unleash your potential, understanding "functional capacity" is no longer just a checkbox, it’s your golden ticket to a life lived on your own terms.
The Big Shift: July 1, 2026 & "New Framework Planning"
Experience a whole new way of looking at support. From July 1, 2026, the NDIS is moving toward what they call New Framework Planning. What does this actually mean for you? Well, the Agency is shifting focus from just "what’s your diagnosis?" to "how do you actually live your life?".
This new approach (our version of a system upgrade) aims to make funding more consistent & based on your actual support needs rather than how well you can write a funding request. It’s designed to be more flexible, but with new rules comes a new way of measuring who you are & what you need to embolden your daily life.
Meet Your New Tools: SNA & I-CAN v6
If you’re aged 16 or over, you’re about to get very familiar with two new acronyms: the Support Needs Assessment (SNA) & the I-CAN v6 tool.
The SNA is essentially a structured conversation (usually about 3 hours, but we suggest breaking it up if you need!) with an NDIA assessor. They’ll be using the I-CAN v6: the "Instrument for Classification & Assessment of Support Needs."
Think of the I-CAN v6 as a deep dive into 12 life domains, including:
Daily activities & self-care.
Communication & social interaction.
Learning & cognition.
Community participation.
It’s designed to be strengths-based, looking at what you can do independently & where you need that extra bit of heart & care to succeed. However, these assessors often aren’t allied health professionals. They might be lovely people, but they don't know your story like we do.

Why Your Evidence Still Matters (The "Human Touch" Difference)
Now, here is the secret sauce: while the NDIA is using their own assessors, having high-quality, independent evidence from your own team is still critical. This is especially true for complex cases & our younger participants who haven't hit the age 16 milestone yet.
You don’t want your future decided by a 45-minute Zoom call with a stranger from a "big provider" who charges a fortune just to misspell your name. You deserve to be seen, heard, & understood.
That’s where our sister company, Planet Ability, comes in. They perform in-person Occupational Therapy (OT) assessments that are the polar opposite of "institutional." They take the time to sit with you, walk with you, & truly understand your functional capacity in the real world. When you show up to your SNA with a Planet Ability report in hand, you aren’t just a number on a screen: you’re a person with a plan.
Preparation is Power: Your Review Checklist
Unleash your inner organiser! Before you head into a Support Needs Assessment or a plan review, you need to be prepared. We want you to feel empowered, not exhausted.
Discover our top tips for a successful review:
Audit Your Evidence: Ensure all your reports (OT, Speech, Psych) are less than 12 months old. The NDIS loves fresh data!
Speak "Functional": Instead of saying "I have ADHD," say "I need verbal prompts & visual schedules to prioritise my morning routine."
Track Your Wins: Keep a log of your "capacity building" milestones. Did you catch the bus alone? Did you cook a meal? These are huge!
The "Worst Day" Rule: It feels counter-intuitive, but describe your support needs based on your most challenging days, not just your best ones.
Invite a Wingman: Never go alone! Bring a family member, a friend, or one of our legendary Planet Oasis support workers.

Cultivating Empowerment through Capacity
At the end of the day, "Functional Capacity" shouldn't feel like a clinical term used to gatekeep funding. To us, it’s about empowerment. It’s about identifying the skills you want to cultivate & the barriers we’re going to help you smash through.
When we talk about building capacity, we aren’t just talking about doing the laundry. We’re talking about:
Friendships: Building the social confidence to join a local club.
Adventure: Gaining the skills to head off on one of our vibrant weekend getaways.
Independence: Transforming "I can't" into "I’m learning how."
Understanding your capacity allows you to take the driver's seat. It’s not just about getting a funding number; it’s about creating lasting memories & finding your place in the community.
