Imagine waking up in a space that is entirely yours. You head to the kitchen to brew your favorite coffee, perhaps checking in with a friendly face who is there just to help you seize the day. This isn’t just a dream; it’s the reality we want to help you cultivate! At Planet Oasis, we believe that every neurodiverse individual deserves a launchpad for their independence.

Applying for Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding under the NDIS can feel like navigating a complex maze, but we are here to transform that journey into an empowering adventure. SIL is essentially your passport to living more independently while receiving the daily support you need to thrive. Whether you are a young adult looking to move out for the first time or a family planning for a bright future, understanding the process is the first step toward unleashing your full potential.

Discover the Heart of SIL: What is it, really?

Before we dive into the "how," let's talk about the "why." SIL is NDIS funding specifically designed to help you live in your own home or a shared living environment. It covers the cost of people (support workers) to help you with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, personal care, & even managing your schedule.

Our version of SIL isn’t about "supervision": it’s about empowerment! It’s the support that helps you learn to cook that signature dish, manage your weekend getaways, & build lasting friendships within your community. It’s about having a team that believes in your brilliance as much as we do.

Step 1: Cultivate Your Vision & Check Eligibility

Every great journey begins with a vision. Before you even look at an NDIS form, take a moment to dream. What does your ideal life look like? Do you want to live with friends? Do you want to be closer to your favorite hobby spots?

To apply for SIL, the NDIS generally looks for a few key things:

  • A Significant Disability: You have a permanent & significant disability that affects your ability to do things for yourself.

  • The Need for 24/7 Support: Usually, SIL is for those who need some level of help around the clock (even if that’s just someone nearby overnight).

  • Independence Goals: You have a genuine desire to build your skills & live more independently.

If you’re between the ages of 9 & 35, this is a prime time to start these conversations. For our younger community members, we start looking at "future-proofing": preparing the skills today so that the transition to SIL in the future is a natural evolution, not a scary leap.

Step 2: Assemble Your Dream Team

You don’t have to do this alone! In fact, we recommend you don't. The most successful SIL applications are built by a team. You’ll want to involve:

  1. Your Support Coordinator: Think of them as your navigator. They understand the NDIS map better than anyone.

  2. Allied Health Professionals: Especially an Occupational Therapist (OT).

  3. Planet Oasis: As your potential NDIS provider, we can help guide you through what a vibrant alternative to traditional living looks like.

You asked & we listened: many of you felt overwhelmed by the jargon. That’s why your team’s job is to translate "clinical requirements" into "human stories."

Step 3: The Power of Evidence (Telling Your Story)

The NDIS doesn't just need forms; they need to hear your story. This is where we gather the evidence that shows why SIL is "reasonable & necessary" for you to thrive.

The most important document here is the Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA). This is a deep dive into your life performed by an OT. It’s not just a medical report; it’s a blueprint of your strengths & the areas where a little extra support can unleash your independence. It should highlight:

  • How you currently manage daily tasks.

  • Where the "gaps" are that prevent you from living on your own.

  • How SIL funding will directly help you reach your goals (like social participation & skill building).

Step 4: The Home & Living Request Form

Now we get to the logistics. To officially tell the NDIS you want SIL, you (or your Support Coordinator) will need to complete the Home & Living Request Form.

Experience the process as a way to advocate for your needs! This form asks about your current living situation & what you want for the future. Are you looking for a group home? A self-contained apartment with onsite support? This is your chance to be bold!

Once this form is submitted, the NDIS "Home & Living" team reviews it to see if SIL is the right fit for you. If they agree, you’ll get the green light to move to the next stage: the Roster of Care.

Step 5: Creating Your Roster of Care (ROC)

This sounds clinical, but it’s actually where the magic happens. A Roster of Care is a detailed breakdown of what your typical week looks like.

  • When do you wake up?

  • When do you need help with breakfast?

  • What time do you head out for your community adventures?

  • How much support do you need overnight?

As your disability support partner, we work with you to create a ROC that reflects a life of excitement & growth, not just "care hours." We send this to the NDIS to show exactly how the funding will be used to keep you safe, happy, & thriving.

Step 6: The Plan Review & Approval!

Once the ROC & quotes are submitted, it’s time to wait for the NDIS to finalize the budget. This can take a little time, but stay visionary! Use this period to visit potential homes or meet potential housemates.

When your plan is approved, you’ll see a budget specifically for "Supported Independent Living" in your Core Supports. This is the moment the doors truly open!
